‘21′ Beats The Odds To Take Box-Office #1, As ‘Horton’ Crosses $100 Million Mark
The Box-Office Top Five
#1 8220;218243; ($23.7 million)
#2 8220;Horton Hears a Who!8221; ($17.4 million)
#3 8220;Superhero Movie8221; ($9.5 million)
#4 8220;Tyler Perry8217;s Meet the Browns8221; ($7.8 million)
#5 8220;Drillbit Taylor8221; ($5.8 million)
The card-counting blackjack geniuses who served as inspiration for 8220;218243; wouldn8217;t be happy with a 23, but for Jim Sturgess, Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey and the rest of the cast and crew, that was the magic number this weekend, as 8220;218243; brought down the house 8212; and the box office 8212; with a $23.7 million haul.
The Robert Luketic flick follows a group of M.I.T. students who use a complicated numerical system to beat Vegas at its own game, but it doesn8217;t take a math genius to count all those tickets. Meanwhile, we8217;re still waiting for the movie that teaches us how to win at roulette.
In second place, Dr. Seuss8217; 8220;Horton Hears a Who!8221; added $17.4 million to its already impressive tally, now a jumbo-size $117 million. More surprising, though, than finding a whole society on a speck of dust? It8217;s almost April and 8220;Horton8221; is the first 2008 release to cross the ever-important $100 million plateau. By this time last year, 8220;300,8221; 8220;Wild Hogs8221; and 8220;Ghost Rider8221; had already hit the mark.
Disappointing in third place was the comic book spoof 8220;Superhero Movie,8221; which made $9.5 million 8212; or about half of what 8220;Meet the Spartans8221; opened with in January. After 15 years of increasing returns, could the spoof genre be deflated? God, we hope so.
8220;Tyler Perry8217;s Meet the Browns,8221; with $7.8 million, and 8220;Drillbit Taylor,8221; with $5.8 million, rounded out the top five. Their two-week totals stand at $32.8 million and $20.6 million, respectively.
Among other new releases, 8220;Stop-Loss8221; performed dismally, managing only $4.5 million and an eighth-place finish. Despite the fact that it was the best-reviewed film of the weekend, Kimberly Peirce8217;s project about a soldier told he has to return to active duty is the latest Iraq-war drama to be ignored by audiences.
Also opening, Simon Pegg and David Schwimmer8217;s 8220;Run, Fatboy, Run8221; managed only $2.4 million for a finish well outside the top 10.
The most charming man in the universe finally crosses the goal line, as George Clooney8217;s 8220;Leatherheads8221; makes its much-delayed debut. Meanwhile, Jodie Foster and Gerard Butler take a magical trip to 8220;Nim8217;s Island,8221; and the Rolling Stones get their very own documentary with Martin Scorsese8217;s 8220;Shine the Light.8221;
Check out everything we8217;ve got on 8220;21,8221; 8220;Horton Hears a Who8221; and 8220;Stop-Loss.8221;
