Paramount has become the first studio to release two $300 million movies back to back, two years in a row.

Last year it was Transformers and Shrek The Third, this year it was Iron Man and Indy.

Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull crossed the three million mark domestically this weekend, catching up to Iron Man’s $309 million domestic take.

Somewhere, right now, someone is trying to pen another film about metal men to team with another film where an established hero has a kid, so Paramount can have the same success next year.

There may already be enough Dark Knight footage online to fill the Bat-computer’s hard-drive twice over, but we can never see enough new stuff, especially when it’s this good.

But, to be fair, we’re probably biased - even the sound of Batman’s cape fluttering in the wind gives us goosebumps.

It’s a case of Hollywood swings and roundabouts today as a director and star that were planning to make one film together might just have jumped ship for another. And yes, we realise that stretches the roundabout metaphor.

The pair consists of Tom Cruise and director Phillip Noyce, who had been planning to make presidential thriller The 28th Amendment. Now Noyce is negotiating to helm Edwin A Salt, a spy drama that Cruise is seriously pondering starring in.

Edwin A Salt finds a CIA agent accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy and the struggle he has to clear his name. It’s already had the likes of Peter Berg and Terry George attached, and Variety is keeping tabs on it.

When she’s not chasing the mysterious and the impossible as Dana Scully, Gillian Anderson would rather spend time on the stage, in prestige TV dramas like Bleak House and developing her own material.

Through her production company, she’s nabbed the rights to Caroline Moorehead’s biography of Martha Gellhorn, a crusading – and trailblazing – female journalist who survived not only Vietnam and the Spanish Civil War but also marriage to Ernest Hemingway.

Anderson plans to star and has already hired Sharman Macdonald to pen a script. Variety is tracking down the story.

Night At The Museum may not have been the greatest film, but it made lots of money and now the sequel’s busy filming.

The follow-up now has an official subtitle (Battle Of The Smithsonian) and has been adding funny folk at a rate of knots to supplement the returning Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Owen Wilson and Ricky Gervais.

Christopher Guest is the latest addition, stepping out of his usual improv projects to play Ivan The Terrible. And he’s not the only new arrival. Superbad’s Bill Hader will play General Custer, Jon Bernthal is Al Capone and Alain Chabat will be Napoleon. Oh, and if that’s not enough, writers Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant are cameoing as the Wright brothers. The Hollywood Reporter is touring the exhibits.

So apparently there’s this new film coming out about Batman? Anyone heard anything about it? Anyone? You, in the back? Yes, yes, we know… The Dark Knight is nearly here and it looks absolutely amazing. But just when you thought you couldn’t see another trailer, along comes… Domino’s Pizza?

Apparently they’ve done a massive tie-in with the film (because we always associated pizza with the Dark Knight) and scored a new, exclusive trailer with plenty of footage. Head over here to see it, but don’t blame us if you get hungry.

Meanwhile, if that’s just a little too dark for you, and you’re after something a little more canine, try the first promo for Hotel For Dogs. It’s a kiddie romp about a hotel. You know, for dogs. And Don Cheadle’s in it. No, we’re not kidding. You can see it at Apple.

If it seems like Darren Aronofsky’s biopic of underdog boxing champ “Irish” Micky Ward has been a long time getting started, that’s probably because it has.

Aronofsky has been developing it for two years and now it’s finally getting set to step out into the filmmaking ring this autumn. Mark Wahlberg and Brad Pitt are starring and according to Wahlberg, he’s been getting ready all this time.

“I want to do him proud. The guy did everything I wish I could have done. He came from nothing, went on to win the world title with all the odds stacked against him. Did it with his mother and his brother,” Wahlberg told MTV. “He’s still in the same town to this day. He’s got a regular job. He knows that I’m going to put it all on the line for him. Mickey Ward is going to be on set, watching me every single day.” Let’s hope he hasn’t seen The Happening first, or fists will fly for real.

A remake of cult ‘60s TV show The Prisoner has been bubbling away like an angry tar monster for ages now – for a long time, Sky were said to be planning a revamp with Christopher Eccleston demanding to know what a mysterious authoritative voice wanted (information, by the way) and ending up trapped in a surreal village.

Now US cable network AMC has announced that it’s snagged Jim Caviezel and Ian McKellen to star in the new show, which will see Caviezel playing Number Six, the role made famous by original Prisoner overlord Patrick McGoohan. The story- if you really can tell from the original – follows a former British secret agent sent for debriefing to the weird locale of The Village, where he’s stripped of his identity, and assigned the iconic number. All around him are strange, disconnected people dressed in bright outfits and he can’t get a straight answer out of anyone. The head of the place is Number Two, which in the original show was played by a revolving guest cast of thesps, but will be McKellen in the miniseries.

Comingsoon.net has the announcement for the series, which will channel 21st century paranoia and surveillance culture. And, with any luck might be just a little easier to follow. But not too easy- that wouldn’t be The Prisoner.

It’s not the first plot that springs to mind when you consider stories suitable for an opera-style makeover, but that hasn’t stopped David Cronenberg, Howard Shore and opera star/director Placido Domingo from sticking with the project.

Now, it’s about ready to start rehearsals in Paris with the Los Angeles Opera performing Shore’s score. But despite Cronenberg’s involvement, don’t expect much vomiting or limb shedding – it’s been adapted from George Langelaan’s original novel, not Cronenberg’s goresome take.

Despite giving one of his generation’s most acclaimed performances in 2005’s “Brokeback Mountain,” the late Heath Ledger never won an Oscar. Could his maniacal reinvention of one of comicdom’s greatest supervillains finally land him the recognition he never received while he was alive?

“I think it’s an incredible performance,” said veteran actor Gary Oldman, his co-star in “The Dark Knight” who himself has drawn critical adoration for such films as “Sid and Nancy” and “Immortal Beloved.” “I think it sets a new benchmark.”
