South Central support The Whip on tour
South Central, one of the brightest new talents to come out of Brighton, are hitting the road with the awesome The Whip. They have been causing quite a stir in the music industry so now it’s time to hear their blend of mash-ups and punk on the live circuit.
South Central are all about MAXIMAL. South Central want you to sit up, stand up, jump up and not stop noticing them till theyre finished. It seems from their inception South Central have always inhabited the hostile worlds of indie and dance simultaneously, unlike the multitudes of cross-over bands who have to find their feet in one genre and only later mutate to include both.
Shrouded in mystery (and indeed their trademark black hoods) the enigma that is South Central manifests itself as both a 2-man DJ/Production duo and as a 5-piece live band; the former spectacularly dissolves the boundaries of what DJing and live music are. The latter is the cowled synthesis of guitars and technology that combines the spirit and song of indie rock with the pounding electronics of big-room techno. No surprise then that both the indie kids and the danceheads are signing up for more.
The Brighton-based duo first surfaced in 2006 with their huge bootleg of Klaxons cover of ‘The Bouncer, which sold out with the blink of an eye. Puregroove Records said on their blog that it was ‘literally growing wings and flying out the door. Via another storming Metronomy mix, they soon delivered ‘Nothing Can Go Wrong as their first proper single and had instant support from Annie Mac and Steve Lamacq at Radio 1, the XFM DJs and MTV where it went straight on to the 120 Minutes ‘Best of Year playlist.
Their second release ‘Castle of Heroes/Dolls went through (XL subsidiary) Young Turks and was a Music Week pick of the week as well as being B-listed on MTV Dance, with the video attracting a massive 12,000 views in its first two weeks on Youtube! A third release ‘Machine/Revolution went through Parlophones ‘Regal Singles Club with 500 x limited 7’s; which provided yet another sold out record attracting a whole host of radio and television support.
Additionally, they have composed a ridiculously popular Late Of The Pier bootleg and official remixes for what can only be described as a whos, who list of the coolest indie acts including The Maccabees, Dandi Wind, Shychild, The Whip, Sunshine Underground and The Wombats.
‘Golden Dawn was released earlier this year and is no-holds-barred adrenalin on a 12′, starting and continuously rolling with trademark distortion; its a fitting work out of dynamic guitars, processed vocals, heavy drums and twisted electronics that will do nothing but make you form an opinion. One thing that cant be argued with is just how big this sounds and the levels of ambition South Central hold. If you werent already aware of them, make sure you remember the name as they have big goals for 2008.
